Location of the Gathering

Uppuveli, Sri Lanka

SunGathering 11.0 will take place in Uppuveli — a small village 6 km away from Triconomale city. Uppuveli is one of the best beaches of the Eastern Sri Lankan shore. Their high season is from April to October with dry and windless weather, unlike the rest of the island.

Uppuveli has clear and warm water to swim in, few tourists, beautiful scenery and various budget accommodation options to choose from. One of the best national parks called Pigeon Island is located nearby. It offers an incredible coral reef to discover that is a prime location for snorkelling and diving. At this time of year it is also possible to see dolphins, turtles and whales.

May on Sri Lanka is one of the richest months for tropical fruits. It is the beginning of mango, pineapple, jackfruit, magosteen, and avocado season. All year round you can also find bananas, coconuts and guavas.

Sun Gathering’s main principle

Each participant contributes to the benefit of others: invests their energy in the organization process, generously shares knowledge and keeps active within the entire program of the Sun Gathering. Tries to keep his/her mind open by observing and accepting oneself, others, and all circumstances as they are. Each participant preserves the purity of consciousness: no alcohol, nicotine, and drugs.

Community speaks

Nobody can tell about Sun Gatherings better than those who have participated in it at least once.

Usually when we start looking for alternatives in life, it is hard to find good conditions to properly learn and to develop new skills. That is why having like-minded people around is the best foundation to continue improving. When I met Sunsurfers I found a space where is easy to relax and focus on the important. I found a knowledgeable family full of respect, discipline and kindness. It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced yogi or if you just begin trying to figure out your way. If you are open minded to trust, learn and share, you will receive the right support and the best motivation to continue growing and spreading your values.

Sun Gathering is a fascinating journey! I re-discovered myself, the inner-child in her heart, and have courage to chase after the sun to live a lifestyle with free spirit. I quit alcohol and eat only vegetarian food after I met the #Sunsurfers in Penang, living in healthy lifestyle with tons of fruits and learning the benefit of fasting. I was suffering with spine pain and chronic pain, regular practice of meditation and yoga, healthy diet has changed my life. I was so inspired with #Sunsurfers who work remotely. After Sun Gathering in Bali, I dived in to learn and found skills that I’m passionate to work. I’m now freelancing and helping for NGO projects, and am on the journey again! I highly recommend Sun Gathering and meet these like-minded community! Together we share love and kindness.

I participated in only one Sun Gathering but even it gave me a wonderful feeling that there are people like me in the world, I am not alone. It gave me a lot of new knowledge which I didn’t know where to find before. The most important thing is that it is the community with good values where you also can put your energy in.

Participating in Sun Gathering for the first time seemed to be «at home». The feeling of a large family, the space of like-minded people was tempered. I want to re-immerse myself in this atmosphere of the sun, smiles, happiness, mutual understanding and embrace. During the Sun Gathering, you get new acquaintances and close friends around the globe, and it's so cool! Sun Gathering is a very transformational event, after which you will never be the same again.

My acquaintance with #Sunsurfers community started in May 2017, when I for the first time came to Morocco for the 8th Sun Gathering. And immediately I felt good, healthy atmosphere in this community. A lot of guys and girls became my friends later. I knew many interesting information and also shared with my knowledges with opened heart and pleasure. In October 2017 me and my wife visited amazing Sun Gathering 9.0 in Turkey. And now I study Spanish and looking forward to the next meeting in Mexico. Who knows, maybe will meet you.

Questions and answers

We will finalize FAQ with useful tips and information about Sri Lanka by 27 January — when we open registration process.
Why will SunGathering take place in Sri Lanka?

Why not? :) We had a positive experience hosting another event in Sri Lanka called SunUniversity, but this will be the first SunGathering in this beautiful country. Sri Lanka is closer to Europe than most Southeast Asian countries. May is high season in the lesser-known eastern side of the island. So, even those who have already visited the island will be able to discover new places. And of course, enjoy the sun, tropical fruits, wonderful beaches and warm Indian Ocean!

How do I apply to attend?

1. Send a participant request by filling in the registration form with honesty.
2. Wait for approval via email within 10 days.
3. Pay the participation cost and receive confirmation.
4. Buy tickets to Sri Lanka.
5. Get to the village Uppuveli.
6. Find a place for living (or book in advance).
7. Show up at the meeting point on the evening of May 5, with an open mind and vibrating heart.

How can I pay the registration fee?

After your application is approved, we will send you an email with payment details. You can pay by card online, by transfer via Paypal or card-to-card transfer to Tinkoff Bank card (for those from Russia). For all payment queries, please only contact Sasha Wickenden through Telegram: @sasha_wickenden. If anyone else writes you regarding payment, please ignore these emails in order to avoid fraud.

What if I can’t fly?

In case of cancellation, the paid fee isn’t refundable. We try to minimize the number of people who aren’t serious about coming to the Sun Gathering.

What are the visa requirements?

Citizens of all countries need a visa to visit Sri Lanka. A visa is valid for 30 days. It can be issued either online or upon arrival at Colombo airport at the ‘Visa on arrival’ desk. The online visa costs $35 (may vary depending on nationality). The cost of the visa on arrival is a bit more expensive — $40. At the airport visas are issued on a first-come-first-served basis. This can be time-consuming so getting a visa online is advised. This can be done at eta.gov.lk. On the homepage select the appropriate language, then go to the “Apply” section and follow the instructions. Online payment may be made by card. The visa confirmation will be emailed within 10-15 minutes after successful completion of the application and payment. Important — please print your visa confirmation and take it with you in printed form!

How to fly and where to buy a ticket?

Most flights arrive at the country’s main airport Bandaranaike in Colombo (CMB).

There are flights to Sri Lanka from Europe and Russia with a transfer in Sharjah (UAE) with AirArabia, in Abu Dhabi (UAE) with Etihad, in Doha (Qatar) with Qatar Airways, or in Bahrain with Gulf Air.

There are direct Aeroflot flights from Moscow. You can also fly via India since often there are low-cost deals from Europe and Asia to this country. For example, prices for return tickets Moscow-Colombo start from $330. However cheaper deals can be found if you look out for airline promotions.

For the best ticket prices use aggregator sites like Skyscanner, Aviasales, Kiwi.

It is usually recommended to buy tickets 2-2.5 months before departure for the best deals.

How to get to Uppuveli?

First, you will need to get to Trincomalee — the closest big city to Uppuveli. To travel from Colombo to Trincomalee there are three options.

The first option is by train. There is one that runs once per day, departing at 9:45pm from Colombo Fort station and arrives in Trincomalee at 5:45am. The fare is from $1.70 to $4.50 depending on the class. The second option is to travel by bus. They run once per hour from Colombo bus station that is located close to Colombo Fort train station. A typical bus ride lasts 8-10 hours depending on traffic jams and costs around $1.70. The third option is taking a taxi straight from Colombo airport that will cost around $150.

From Trincomalee to Uppuveli there are buses running every 20-30 minutes from the Central Bus Station Trincomalee. The bus ride lasts 15-20 minutes and costs about $0.20. From Trincomalee you can also travel by tuk-tuk from the same bus station and that will cost around $1.30. The advantage of tuk-tuk is that there is no need to wait for the next scheduled bus.

What about accommodation?

On booking.com there are more than 60 accommodation options in Uppuveli to choose from. You can check in Uppuveli itself as well as a couple of kilometres to the north in the neighbouring area of Deva Nagar. You can see it immediately if you open the site in map view mode.

Prices start from $10 for a double room without breakfast (such as the inexpensive Emerald House hotel). With a budget of up to $20 per day, you have a wider range of options to choose from. There are also interesting options on Airbnb. However, you stand a better chance to negotiate a lower price in person, especially if you pay for all 10 days of the gathering at once. And if you cut out the middle man, hosts do not have to pay the 15-25% commission to online agencies. So it will be easier for them to offer a lower price.

What are the prices like there?

Prices in Sri Lanka in general and in Uppuveli in particular are very attractive for foreigners. There are budget accommodations from $10 per day, there are budget cafes/ restaurants offering food from $1.50 per dish. For more price estimates for food and various services, please visit numbeo.com.

What about vegetarian food?

It is easy to find vegetarian food as it is offered in most Uppuveli cafes. For example, the famous Fernando’s Bar serves vegetarian fried rice, vegetarian burritos, vegetarian burgers and so on. At the Rice 'n' Curry restaurant there is a vegetarian buffet for $4. At the Be Cool Juice Bar you can buy fresh juice made of local seasonal fruits for just $1.

What is the weather like in May?

It is high season in Uppuveli in May. That means the weather is dry, windless and warm. During the day the temperature is about 29-32 degrees Celsius, and at night it is about 24-26 degrees Celsius. Sunscreen and a headwear will definitely come in handy! The ocean temperature in May is about 30 degrees Celsius.

What's the deal with mobile internet?

There are 4 mobile operators in Sri Lanka, the main ones being Dialog and Mobitel. You can buy their SIM cards in almost any store in tourist areas. The cost of a SIM card with zero balance varies from $1 to $3 depending on willingness of the seller.

Our friends, experienced travellers in Sri Lanka, recommend the Dialog operator. An 8GB internet package (4GB at any time, and 4GB at night) costs $3.40. All packages offered by this operator can be found on their official website.

Which language do we use to communicate with locals?

Sri Lanka has 2 official languages — Sinhalese and Tamil. Until 1957 the official language was English, which remains widely used throughout the country. According to the constitution of Sri Lanka, English has the official status of the language of inter-ethnic communication. It is often possible to speak in English.

Your next best option is switching to the Tamil language as it is most widely spoken in the Trincomalee area. To help you get started, here are some basic words in Tamil:

Vanakkam — hello (for any time of the day).
Kaalai vanakkam — good morning.
Maalai vanakkam — good evening.
Nandri — thank you.
Romba Nandri — thank you very much.

How safe is Sri Lanka?

It is easy to feel safe in Sri Lanka. People are very friendly and responsive. But just like everywhere else, it is necessary to observe basic safety rules especially with respect to personal valuables.
