Location of the Gathering

Mazunte, Oaxaca, Mexico

The anniversary Sun Gathering will be held in the small beach village of Mazunte, Oaxaca. It has the state status of «Pueblo Mágico», which translates as «a magical village». That status follows a great emphasis on eco-tourism, so there are no big hotels and chained-supermarkets.

The village of Mazunte was blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It is quiet, calm and secluded. Two yoga-centers hold seminars and retreats here. The Mexicans themselves come to Mazunte to take a break from big-city-life.

During the Sun Gathering in Mazunte, there will be a season of mangoes, whales, dolphins and turtles. The wild sandy beaches El Rinconcito and Playa Mermejita are an excellent place for morning yoga practice, sunrises and sunsets.

Sun Gathering’s main principle

Each participant contributes to the benefit of others: invests their energy in the organization process, generously shares knowledge and keeps active within the entire program of the Sun Gathering. Tries to keep his/her mind open by observing and accepting oneself, others, and all circumstances as they are. Each participant preserves the purity of consciousness: no alcohol, nicotine, and drugs.

Community speaks

Nobody can tell about Sun Gatherings better than those who have participated in it at least once.

Sun Gathering is a fascinating journey! I re-discovered myself, the inner-child in her heart, and have courage to chase after the sun to live a lifestyle with free spirit. I quit alcohol and eat only vegetarian food after I met the #Sunsurfers in Penang, living in healthy lifestyle with tons of fruits and learning the benefit of fasting. I was suffering with spine pain and chronic pain, regular practice of meditation and yoga, healthy diet has changed my life. I was so inspired with #Sunsurfers who work remotely. After Sun Gathering in Bali, I dived in to learn and found skills that I’m passionate to work. I’m now freelancing and helping for NGO projects, and am on the journey again! I highly recommend Sun Gathering and meet these like-minded community! Together we share love and kindness.

Participating in Sun Gathering for the first time seemed to be «at home». The feeling of a large family, the space of like-minded people was tempered. I want to re-immerse myself in this atmosphere of the sun, smiles, happiness, mutual understanding and embrace. During the Sun Gathering, you get new acquaintances and close friends around the globe, and it's so cool! Sun Gathering is a very transformational event, after which you will never be the same again.

My acquaintance with #Sunsurfers community started in May 2017, when I for the first time came to Morocco for the 8th Sun Gathering. And immediately I felt good, healthy atmosphere in this community. A lot of guys and girls became my friends later. I knew many interesting information and also shared with my knowledges with opened heart and pleasure. In October 2017 me and my wife visited amazing Sun Gathering 9.0 in Turkey. And now I study Spanish and looking forward to the next meeting in Mexico. Who knows, maybe will meet you.

I saw the one and only Marat Chasanov for the first time in Penang in Malaysia. He was like an example to me. Later in my trip we met again in Vietnam. He asked if we wanted to join the last night of the Sun Gathering. We didn’t know anybody, we even didn’t participate but he was so happy to welcome us. We had an amazing time! Everybody was so friendly and nice! And Marat? He is still my biggest example!

Have you ever read a book and penetrated it so much that you felt like in another reality? In a place where everything is much brighter and more interesting? Sun Gathering is like this, only not in the book, but in reality. If someone asked me how to make life better, my answer is to go there, where people breathe the same "air" as you. Sun Gathering is not about a place, but about people who create incredible vibrations and an indescribable atmosphere!

I participated in only one Sun Gathering but even it gave me a wonderful feeling that there are people like me in the world, I am not alone. It gave me a lot of new knowledge which I didn’t know where to find before. The most important thing is that it is the community with good values where you also can put your energy in.

Sun Gathering is a wave of love and open hearts, serving others in joy, this is the acceptance of numerous parts of myself and watching thousands of mirrors around. Sun Gathering means friends and like-minded people around the world. Joint morning practice on the meeting charges with energy for the whole day. And Marat is a good example of how it’s possible to live. For this it is worth to come.

If you're ready, it changes you a lot. Especially powerful side effect for beginners - there is a chance not to return home the same. There is a chance not to return home at all. I remember how I flew to Georgia for 10 days one and a half years ago and still can’t stop travelling.

Questions and answers

Why is the Sun Gathering in Mexico?

We have lived in Asia and held many activities over there. But the region became too familiar and comfortable. The same can mostly be said about Europe. That’s why we decided to take on a new continent and start discovering America. We begin in Mexico! This country has many advantages. No visa required. Sandy beaches that aren’t too crowded. Lots of sun, fruits, and kind people. Mango season, whales, dolphins, turtles, and pyramids.

How do I apply to attend?

1. Send a participant request by filling in the registration form with honesty.
2. Wait for approval via email within 10 days.
3. Pay the participation cost and receive confirmation.
4. Buy tickets to Mexico.

What about accommodation?

You can find bungalows or cabanas from 200 pesos per room for two. For 100 pesos a day, you can live in a hostel, and for 300, rent a comfortable place for 2-4 people. It’s possible to pay a special reduced price when staying for a longer time.

How to fly there and where to buy a ticket?

It’s better to reach the airports of Puerto Escondido or Huatulco. You may need a layover in Mexico City or other major cities. You can also travel around the country by bus.
Fly to Mexico from New York for $200-350 round-trip, from Spain, Poland, and Belgium for 180-250 euros one way.

Tickets from Russia cost about $800-1000, but if you fly with a layover in New York or European cities (Madrid, Brussels, Warsaw), you can keep the costs within $500. For a layover in Europe that takes less than 24 hours, a transit visa isn’t needed. Some airlines, such as KLM, Lufthansa, AirFrance, and Iberia, sell discounted tickets to Mexico.

Browse for cheap tickets on aggregator sites, like Skyscanner, Kiwi or Aviasales.

How should I speak with the locals?

Local people speak Spanish. Not too many people understand English, so the Sun Gathering is an excellent chance to learn Spanish basics or at least a few useful phrases.
There are simple lessons on YouTube where you can learn the greetings and necessary phrases. An example of such a training video is available here.

Even if a Mexican speaks English, the local people are always pleased when you speak Spanish. Below you’ll find the simplest phrases and expressions in Spanish.

¡Hola! — Hi!
¿Cómo estás? — How are you?
De acuerdo, gracias — Fine, thank you!
¿Cuál es tu nombre? — What is your name?
Mi nombre es Marat — My name is Marat
Sí — Yes
No — No
No entiendo — I don’t understand

You’d better gesticulate actively in conversation, so it will be easier to understand each other!

How safe is it?

You can find a lot of descriptions online covering the security situation in Mexico, but not everything is worth believing. Mazuntė is a quiet and peaceful place where the Mexicans themselves are heading to rest from the city life and material worries. Foreign tourists and yogis are regulars, although the village still isn’t crowded. Authorities keep an eye on Mazuntė to keep it safe.
